WEB 2.0 and Social Media
What is Web 2.0? According to John Robb It is system that breaks with the old model of centralized web sites and moves to the power of the web/internet to the desktop. Term Web 2.0 is introduced by O’Reilly Media in 2004 as the second generation web that appears collaboration and shared information via online. In 2004, the term began its rise in popularity when O'Reilly Media and MediaLive hosted the first Web 2.0 conference. In their opening remarks, John Batelle and Tim O'Reilly outlined their definition of the "Web as Platform", where software applications are built upon the Web as opposed to upon the desktop. The unique aspect of this migration, they argued, is that "customers are building your business for you". They argued that the activities of users generating content (in the form of ideas, text, videos, or pictures) could be "harnessed" to create value.
Web 2.0 can be described in three parts:
- (RIA) defines the experience brought from desktop to browser whether it is from a graphical point of view or usability point of view.
- Web-oriented architecture (WOA) defines how Web 2.0 applications expose their functionality so that other applications can leverage and integrate the functionality providing a set of much richer applications. Examples are feeds, RSS, Web Services, mash-ups.
- Social Web defines how Web 2.0 tends to interact much more with the end user and make the end-user an integral part.
Web 2.0 is era make almost people connecting into web which powerful providing and distributing content (text, graphic, etc) on the web. Websites make people be able to share content on the web easily (don’t need knowledge about programming) is web 2.0: Blog, Photo Sharing (flickr), Video Sharing (Youtube), Presentation Sharing (Slideshare.net), Social Networking (facebook, myspace, Friendster, etc)
Generally, websites that is built by technology Web 2.0 have features:
· Folksonomy - free classification of information; allows users to collectively classify and find information (e.g. tagging)
· Rich User Experience - dynamic content; responsive to user input
· User Participation - information flows two ways between site owner and site user by means of evaluation, review, and commenting. Site users add content for others to see
· Software as a service - Web 2.0 sites developed APIs to allow automated usage, such as by an app or mashup
· Mass Participation - Universal web access leads to differentiation of concerns from the traditional internet user base
The important part of Web 2.0 is Social Web. It consists of online tools and platforms where people share their perspectives, opinions, and experiences. Web 2.0 applications tend to interact much more with the end user. The end user is not only a user of application but also participant by Podcasting, Blogging, Tagging, Currating with RSS, Social Bookmarking, Social Networking, and Web Content Voting.
The Characteristic Web 2.0
· The Web as platform
Platform means place to run the application. Using internet as platform means that certain applications run directly on internet not in certain operation system. Example, Google and Flickr could be accessed by all of operation system.
· Harnessing Collective Intelligence
Web 2.0 application used much intelligence collectively. Therefore it appears big basis knowledge as result of collection from many people. Example, Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia based on the unlikely notion that an entry can be added by any web user, and edited by any other, is a radical experiment in trust, applying Eric Raymond's dictum (originally coined in the context of open source software) that "with enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow," to content creation. Wikipedia is already in the top 100 websites, and many think it will be in the top ten before long. This is a profound change in the dynamics of content creation!
· Data is the next intel inside
The strength Web 2.0 application put on data. Internet application that it’s very well always support by good and unique data. Like Google has organizing and managing data page Web on internet. Amazon has complete data of books. Therefore, the best company which they can manage the data.
· End of software Release Cycle
Web 2.0 application always updates continuously without waiting certain time.
· Lightweight Programming Models
· Software Above the Level of a Single
Device
· Rich User Experiences
